Project Description

Episode Five: Nick Bradley-Qalilawa

‘Life after pro football – Actually, just life’

Short Episode

“There is this big fallacy that you have to be doing the one thing in life that satisfies all of your needs. We put that expectation on relationships; that ONE person emotionally, mentally, physically. On work; that ONE job providing all the satisfaction, money.

I actually believe I might just be really good at some stuff that makes money, love working in the community, but there is this other purpose of mine to develop that fulfills me!”

Full Episode

“The sexual drive we have is actually the drive of creation. It drives us to succeed, to climb mountains. Why did monkeys build the Eiffel Tower? That drive!

Pornography just deadens that. I don’t want to steal my own drive. If I feel the urge to have sex, I want to connect with that – Is it that urge to create, the urge to build and grow. Why would I want to anaesthetise that? I want that power!”

In Episode Five Mike sits down with Nick Bradley-Qalilawa; former professional sportsman, turned PT, coach and Rite of Passage facilitator for boys that have slipped through the cracks.

Nick is an extremely aware and interesting guy, which is why Mike wanted him on the show. From giving insight into life after professional football, to his own approach to pornography and being in tune tot he fire inside him, there is loads of goodness in here.

I always enjoy my own chats with Nick, as I did this one (very much), and I think you will too.

We start the conversation with Nick giving his insight into being a professional footballer (Rugby League – NRL). Not only that, but Mike queries him on how such a intelligent and conscious guy like Nick can survive and handle such a blokey macho world like the NRL.

Nick goes from here and his upbringing into how he got into coaching, via a traumatic experience of his sister dying and wanting to have better skills to have those tougher conversations.

We then hear from Nick about life after football and what this looked like for him specifically, essentially starting again from scratch with only noddles in the cupboard and an empty bank account.

Nick then gets into one of the conversations he thinks is brewing, that being the one inside himself. This really becoming an extension of his life after football, with his current businesses and relationship providing him purpose, as well as working with young men as they transition into manhood. Nick shares his perspective around finding and following things that bring your purpose.

There is some great nuggets throughout this, especially in this final piece. However, if you like this, then be sure to check out he full version as we dive into more depth and other topics including how porn steals our creative power.

We start the conversation with Nick giving his insight into being a professional footballer (Rugby League – NRL). Not only that, but Mike queries him on how such a intelligent and conscious guy like Nick can survive and handle such a blokey macho world like the NRL.

Nick goes from here and his upbringing into what lights him up now and what he spends his time doing. We hear about his work delivering and facilitating Rite of Passage journeys for young men.

Mike challenges Nick on the things he finds hard to talk about. We see Nick talk about becoming a self sufficient man, leading to his various strengths, but also his inability to ask for help, something he’s working on.

This extends into how he got into coaching, via a traumatic experience of his sister dying and wanting to have better skills to have those tougher conversations. Previously not really being able t empathise and understand why someone wouldn’t look after themselves.

We then hear from Nick about life after football and what this looked like for him specifically, essentially starting again from scratch with only noddles in the cupboard and an empty bank account.

We then see Mike ask about the common conversation that plays in Nick’s head, that being a low level and reasonably consistent anxiety that he should be doing something else in that very moment. Something he’s also working on, in particular in turns of stepping up as a leader and empowering others.

Nick shares some stories around the men in his life that helped to paint the path to manhood he has followed and now lives, from his step father and granddad to the simultaneous example and anti-example of his father.

Then in an incredibly real and insightful chat, nick shares the one thing he never talks about; porn. He gives some insight into how this can steal the creative power we have and the tendency for men to often numb the genuine spark in them.

There is loads of great stuff in this chat, make sure you watch for yourself.
